Dr. Medi Eslani is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained glaucoma specialist at American Eye Associates, serving San Diego County and the Imperial Valley. He completed his ophthalmology residency and glaucoma fellowship at the Shiley Eye Institute, UC San Diego, training under Dr. Robert N. Weinreb, one of the world's foremost authorities on glaucoma.
Before becoming a surgeon, Dr. Eslani built an internationally recognized research career in cornea and ocular surface disease under Dr. Edward Holland and Dr. Ali Djalilian, and served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed publications and multiple textbook chapters, and was honored with the prestigious Heed Fellowship.
Today he pairs that deep academic foundation with advanced surgical skill across cataract, refractive, glaucoma, and ocular surface care. Your First Visit
A first consultation runs longer than a routine eye appointment, because the imaging and measurements that determine your options take time and cannot sensibly be rushed.
Plan the time
Between testing, imaging, and time with Dr. Eslani, a first surgical consultation takes longer than most people expect. Booking it on a day you are not rushed makes for a better visit.
Bring a driver
Dilation is necessary to examine your retina and optic nerve properly, and it leaves vision blurry and light-sensitive for several hours afterward. Arrange a ride and bring sunglasses.
What to bring
Bring your current glasses or contact lens prescription, a list of your medications including eye drops, your insurance card, and any records from previous eye surgery, particularly LASIK, PRK, or RK.
No pressure
You will leave understanding your options, the trade-offs, and what each would cost. Deciding is a separate step, and nobody is asked to commit on the day of their consultation.
